This must be why the first season of the show so often sets up a challenge to the aristocratic order, as the characters chafe against their roles, only to finally find fundamental honor in them. The most egregious example in the first season was, of course, ... [ Published Jan 17 2012 by Salon ]

Quotes

As a new BBC series focuses on Chatsworth House, we talk to its proud but diffident owner "Nice to meet you,” says Peregrine Cavendish 12th Duke of Devonshire , custodian of Chatsworth House, shocking me to the core. Then, to confound me even further, he responds to my, “How are you?” with an American, “I’m good.” This, after all, is the son of Dowager Duchess “Debo”, the last surviving Mitford sister and therefore nephew of Nancy Mitford, who famously informed the world that “Nice/Pleased to meet you” were – along with words like “mirror” and “pardon” – horribly “Non-U”. Nancy might be turning in her grave, but I doubt “Duke” – as his 500 staff call him (“I don’t like your Grace; it makes me sound like a bishop”) – cares. Aged 68, he may look like a cookie-cutter lanky, slightly diffident aristo in a green jacket and tie, but he has no time for tradition. Recently he proclaimed the aristocracy “dead” and announced he would drop his title if life peerages were abolished. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, he wrote: “Should hereditary peers be removed from the House of Lords, I would indeed strongly consider dropping the public use of my title as I believe that I would have to consider and respond to any future democratic mandate against hereditary peerage.” The Duke also fills his glorious Capability Brown parkland every year with contemporary statues – a neon sign flashing “LOVE” at the top of the 300-year-old Cascade waterfall; Damien Hirst winged horses at the top of Paxson’s Emperor fountain. And now, as is the modern way, he is starring in a new, fly-on-the-wall documentary Chatsworth, the first episode of which will be shown on BBC One next week last week. How long did filming go on for? “Forever!” he sighs, sitting in Chatsworth’s dimly lit library, with its painted ceiling, wooden gallery and world-famous collection of 30,000 books, as tourists gape at us over a velvet rope. “Or it seemed like it anyway.” So are the Duke and his wife, Amanda, about to become our latest reality stars – to rival the younger so-called aristocratic set of Made in Chelsea? “Absolutely not,” he harrumphs. “Chatsworth is a building, not a person. I’m in about 15 per cent of it, more than enough, because I am involved in the everyday running of the place, so I’m bound to be. But the documentary is much more about the wonderful team that runs the place.” Having watched the first charming episode, I can confirm that Chatsworth is no Big Brother; nor indeed Downton Abbey , which the Duke has never seen (“I don’t watch telly” – although he is delighted with the boost the series has given to the heritage industry)."
